A frostbitten expedition finally finds the lost caves — and isn't alone down there.

I began my journey in search of the lost caves of Absconditus early in my childhood. My father and his father would spend countless hours poring over ancient texts, scrolls, and tablets searching in vain for the entrance. The only education I received was in relation to this topic and so their passion passed down to me. After my grandfather passed away only several days after I turned 15 years of age, I took over as my father's assistant. I learned more than I ever thought imaginable and I came to understand their obsession as it slowly became mine. There were legends of the aretes, that to fail in traversing them would tear you apart. The horns were so sharp and narrow that the ancient scripts referred to them as the daggers of the earth. In addition, with the sub-zero temperatures allowing for immense snow and ice storms, even if we did locate the entrance, it would be a task simply to get there.
At last! My father and I had found it! Endless drumlins and ground moraines had left us lost and wandering numerous times. After nine additional years of research, excavating, and travel, the entrance to the cave was in front of us. Frostbitten and ready to jump right in, we commenced. Everything we saw is beyond comprehension. The stalagmites and stalactites imbued with an ominous bluish hue allowing only just enough light to allow visibility. We navigated our way through the city exploring what we could. We discovered a building where thousands of crystals were stored and the geodes they were harvested from. We did determine from the texts that the crystals were a form of currency used by the people who once lived here.
We found another, less modified area that housed a natural underground hot spring. We took advantage of this and allowed ourselves a moment of reprieve to warm our bones and partake of a ration. We explored the spring a bit and discovered the source seemed to be a geyser that had been harnessed. We spent several days exploring every space. We took hundreds of pictures and marked the coordinates in our GPS. We had to retain as much information about the location as possible if we were to return. As we began preparations to leave, we heard noises coming from all around us. Spooked, as nothing could be here besides us, we continued packing with a new urgency, fearing a collapse. The noises grew louder. Something was closing in. We grabbed our gear and turned towards the exit. A sudden, sharp pain started in my neck. I reached and found a dart there. Growing drowsy, realizing too late that these weren't abandoned, I was greeted by darkness.
